Aging Skin and Makeup: Our Tricks of The Trade

Woman treating her aging skin Aging Skin and Makeup: Our Tricks of The Trade

Gone are the days of makeup being used to simply add a pop of color to our eyes with eyeshadow and mascara. Makeup has only gotten better with time, and can actually help coverup signs of aging. Our dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute have the best tricks of the trade to help you disguise aging skin and look good and natural while doing so.

Causes of Aging Skin

Aging skin can begin at any age but often occurs to women in their 30s and older. Aging is caused from a lack of elasticity in the skin. The skin begins to produce less collagen which results in under eye circles, sagging skin, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Some signs of aging are more discreet than others but may leave you wondering if you should begin anti-aging treatments, such as Botox, lip fillers, or cheek fillers, just to name a few. You may also wonder if there is an easier, less expensive alternative to hide your insecurities. Fortunately, with the use of certain makeup products you can hide what you don’t like with a natural, beautiful makeup routine.

3 Makeup Tricks of the Trade

Makeup can be used in many different ways to achieve different looks, hide certain features or accentuate features while hiding the signs of aging. A common sign of aging is under-eye circles. They can be dark, deep, and very noticeable. Luckily, concealing them is possible with makeup. First, use an eye cream to help reduce puffiness. This will also help prep the skin for makeup application. Next, use a color corrector to help counteract the appearance of the circles. Apply it on the under-eye bags in an upside-down triangle and then blend it together. Lastly, apply a creamy concealer to the area, blend it with the color corrector and watch your under-eye bags disappear.

Another sign of aging is wrinkles. Begin with a primer on the face and neck to help soften the wrinkles. Silicone-based primers will help fill in uneven skin texture and fine lines. Next, use a light-moisture and sheer foundation. This will help to cover up the wrinkles.

Lastly, sagging skin is common as we age. Learning how to contour your face instead of spending money on a face lift or cheek fillers can help reveal the cheekbones you once had and give the illusion that your face is tighter than it is. When contouring your face, a mix of dark and light makeup is used to hide certain features and give the illusion of others. First, apply foundation and concealer to prep your skin for the additional makeup. Next, you will need a highlighter and a contour product. The highlighter should be two shades lighter than your natural skin tone and the contour should be two shades darker. You will first highlight the areas under your eyes, the inner corners of your eyes, the bridge of your nose, above your cheekbones and along your cupid’s bow. Next, use the contour to accentuate certain areas of your face such as your hairline, cheekbones, and sides of your nose. Remember to blend, but you are sure to love the results.
