Holiday stress is here, and it is very real. It not only affects us mentally but can affect us physically as well. Many say stress makes us age faster and that is because when we are stressed, we will start noticing more fine lines and wrinkles in our face. Fortunately, chemical peels are here to save the day and the dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute can perform them for you.
A chemical peel is a type of facial that is great to work into your skincare routine when you are feeling stressed or when your skin simply needs some extra love and care. It is especially helpful to have done during stressful times, such as the holiday season, to help with relaxation and remove the physical effects stress has on the body. Chemical peels can be added on to facials or done as a standalone procedure
As you prepare for a chemical peel, you may be asked to take an antiviral medication, a retinoid cream or a bleaching agent to prevent infections, help with healing and reduce side effects. Additionally, you will be asked to avoid the sun and certain types of hair removal.
Chemical peels vary between light, medium and deep but the way the skin is prepped by the dermatologist for each is the same. The dermatologist will clean your face and then potentially provide you with some pain relief. Once you are prepped, the peel will begin.
During a light chemical peel, a chemical solution containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid is applied. The skin will begin to turn white and you may feel a mild stinging sensation. Once ready, the dermatologist will use a neutralizing solution to remove the chemicals from the skin. After the peel, the skin will be red, dry, and irritated but will heal within seven days. Results of a light chemical peel include improved skin texture and lessens the appearance of fine lines.
During a medium chemical peel, a stronger chemical solution will be applied to the face to help the skin whiten. Stinging may be felt, and a cool compress may be given to help. After the peel, your skin will be red and swollen and may become crusted. The skin will heal in five to seven days. Results will include fewer fine lines and a much smoother face.
Lastly, during a deep chemical peel, you will first be given an IV of fluids. Carbolic acid will be applied to the skin turning it gray or white. This process will be repeated every 15 minutes up to 90 minutes. After the peel, you will have severe redness and severely dried out skin. Ointment will need to be applied to help aid the healing process which will take up to two weeks. Results will include fewer fine lines and a deep exfoliation of the skin that will last for years.
