Enter the New Year with New Skin. Get a Chemical Peel and Enjoy its Many Benefits

We have all heard the saying, new year, new me. While many make internal changes and goals as they head into the new year, we can also make new changes on the outside, starting with our skin. A chemical peel can help you head into the new year with new skin to ensure your year starts on the right foot with a boost of confidence. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute share the ins and outs of how chemical peels work and their many benefits below.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are an intense facial that helps to remove surface layers of skin resulting in smoother, brighter and new skin. They are often used to help treat lines, wrinkles, sun damage, scarring, acne and pigmentation issues such as age spots, sunspots or brown spots. Chemical peels vary from light peels to medium peels to deep peels, each with different benefits. Light peels help with mild skin impurities. Medium peels help to resurface the skin and improve its appearance. They are best for uneven skin tone and texture, fine lines and facial elasticity. Deep peel results last for years after treatment. They are best for improving wrinkles, skin discoloration and sun damage.

How Each Chemical Peel Works

Prior to all chemical peels, patients often apply a special cream to ensure the peel is effective. As the peel begins, the dermatologist will clean the skin of makeup and oils, so they are working on a clean slate.

During a light peel, the chemical solution is applied for up to 15 minutes as it works to exfoliate the skin. It is then neutralized and washed off. A cooling serum or compress will be used to help soothe the skin. After the treatment, patients can expect to see mild redness after the peel. New skin will appear within two weeks and treatments should be continued every other week for four months to continue seeing results.

During a medium peel, the chemical solution is applied for up to 15 minutes before a neutralizing agent is used to stop the exfoliation. A burning sensation may be felt during the peel but should not be too painful. After the chemicals are cleaned off your face, a soother serum or cooling compress will be used to ease any discomfort. During the healing process, patients can expect to see redness and flaking or crusting.

During a deep peel, a superficial chemical peel is performed first. This allows for the deep chemical peel to penetrate the skin even further. As the deep chemical peel solution is applied it turns white as it exfoliates the skin. The solution is then neutralized and cleaned off. A cool compress or serum will be used to help ease any discomfort. During the healing process, patients can expect to see redness, flaking, crusting and swelling that can last up to two weeks.
