Fungal infection on a man's foot Here Are the Top Most Common Fungal Infections

Fungal infections often do not look appealing and can cause a lot of discomfort and even some pain. There are many different fungal infections that should be seen by a dermatologist so they can diagnose it and develop a treatment plan. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute know the signs and symptoms of fungal infections and how to help.

What is a Fungal Infection?

A fungal infection is a common disease that can affect males or females at any age. There are many different types of fungal infections that all have different causes. Most of them result in some type of skin irritation, redness, itching or swelling. The most common fungal infections include athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and fungal nail infections.

What Are the Most Common Fungal Infections?

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common type of fungal infection that affects the foot. It is often picked up in moist places. This includes shoes, socks, swimming pools, and other public places you visit while barefoot. Once contracted, you may notice peeling/cracking on the foot, blisters, itching, and/or a burning sensation. While there are four types of athlete’s foot, the most common that occurs is interdigital, meaning the infection occurs in between your two smallest toes and may spread to the sole of your foot. Once it is determined you have athlete’s foot, a dermatologist will give you antifungal medicine to help clear it up.

Jock Itch

Jock itch is another common fungal infection that affects moist areas of the body such as the genitals, inner thighs, and buttocks. It represents itself as a red, itchy rash in the shape of a circle. You will also experience itching, burning, redness and/or peeling. It also can be spread from person to person if the affected areas touch someone else. Once diagnosed, treatment includes antifungal medicines. You also will be asked to keep the affected area dry and change your clothes daily.

Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection that appears as a red, circular sore. Ringworm is accompanied by scaly skin, with the outer part of the ring raised from the skin. Other rings may appear as well and overlap other rings. Ringworm is often picked up in warm areas or from clothes or furniture. It is contagious if someone comes into direct contact with the infection. As with the others, antifungal medications will help clear up ringworm. If it is a severe case, prescription medications may be used.

Fungal Nail Infections

A fungal nail infection is caused by an infection in the toe, resulting in an infection in the nail. The nail becomes brittle, thick and separates from the nail bed. It is often caused from being in a warm and moist environment. If the infection is not bothering you or does not look severe, treatment may not be needed. The best treatment is antifungal medications. Unfortunately, it is common for the nail infection to come back though.
