Is It Too Late to Start an Anti-Aging Skin Care Routine?

The sooner you start your anti-aging skin care routine the more time you are able to see results, but it’s never too late to begin. With the right products and right routine, you can have the results you are looking for whether you start at age 30 or age 55. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute can help you discover the best routine and the best products based on the results you are looking to have.

How to Prevent Skin Aging

Aging Skin

As we age, our skin may begin to show signs that we are getting older. Some skin changes earlier on, such as in one’s thirties, while others’ skin does not show signs of aging until their fifties or sixties. A variety of factors play a role in when the skin begins to age including genetics and sun damage. Aging skin can be hereditary. If you come from a long line of men or women who have shown early signs of aging, or aging at all, your skin is likely to follow suit.

Another factor in aging skin is how well we take care of it when it is exposed to sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can be damaging to our skin and result in loose skin, wrinkles, dark spots and more. SPF sunscreen is always recommended to be worn, even on a cloudy day. SPF will not 100% protect your skin from showing signs of aging, but it can delay it if used properly and often.

Some people may not notice signs of aging skin or not feel the need to start a skincare routine at an early age. No matter the age you are, as long as you start a routine you are on the best path to keeping your skin looking healthy and young.

Common Skin Care Routines

Anti-aging skin care routines are simple and often include cleansers, exfoliants, anti-aging serums, moisturizer and sunscreen. Before bed, begin your routine with a gentle cleanser. A gentle cleanser will help remove any product or makeup applied during the day. With a fresh, clean face, the other products applied to your face will be able to absorb into your skin better. Next, find an exfoliant with glycolic acid in it. This will help promote the skin replenishing and hydrating itself.

The exfoliant should then be followed by an anti-aging serum of your choice. The serum used should be one geared toward the results you are looking for. Serums with retinoids or Vitamin C are most often used to combat aging skin. Next up is finding a moisturizer. Dry skin leads to facial lines and the best way to combat it is through moisturizing. Find ones with hyaluronic acid for the best results. Lastly, as mentioned above, sunscreen is important each day of the year. Even if it is a cloudy day, the sun is behind the clouds trying to wreak havoc on your face. Instead of applying sunscreen at night, apply it before you head outside for the day to ensure your skin is avoiding sun damage.
