Obtaining Your Most Natural Results with Fillers

If you’ve ever felt insecure about the size of your lips or cheeks, fillers may be the perfect solution for you. This almost painless procedure will help you achieve a natural, fuller looking face. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute are able to assist throughout the entire process and procedure using these two treatments for achieving your most desired results.

What to Know About Filler Treatments

Juvederm

Juvederm is a dermal filler that adds volume to plump lips, fills lines in the forehead or crows feet, lifts your face and contours cheeks. Over time, our lips and skin lose naturally occurring collagen and hyaluronic acid. This causes the skin to lose its plumpness and vitality. The nonsurgical procedure helps reverse these effects. A fine needle is used to inject a clear gel around the lips or the area where the procedure is taking place. Topical numbing medication is typically used first to avoid discomfort during the procedure. The gel contains hyaluronic acid, which adds direct volume to the lips, fills the cheek area and smooths fine lines around the mouth. Juvederm simply replaces the lost hyaluronic acid that is a result of aging.

In addition, because this filler is composed of something that is not foreign to the body, an allergy test is not required. No allergy test is unique to this type of treatment. The procedure typically only takes minutes and results last up to one year. There are only minimal side effects. Side effects include tenderness, bruising, redness, itching, pain, and firmness. In addition, compared to collagen treatments of the past, any bumps that may appear dissolve easily. There is also much less bruising. The treatment also lasts longer than collagen treatments.

Restylane

Restylane is very similar to Juvederm. This filler is also a clear gel composed of hyaluronic acid that is injected into the treatment area. Restylane does not contain any animal protein and is nonanimal based. Similar to Juvederm, the area is numbed with a topical cream and a fine needle injects the gel around the treatment area. The results of Restylane typically last up to six months. Results include smoother, fuller, more voluminous lips or a fuller face. However, if you are treated again within four and a half to nine months of your first treatment, you will see results for up to 18 months.

Side effects of this treatment are the same as Juvederm, but if they last longer than two weeks you should seek medical advice. You can return to work and normal activity almost immediately after this procedure. This treatment is FDA-approved and recommended for patients 21 and over. It is recommended that two weeks before the scheduled treatment you avoid taking aspirin, vitamin E, fish oil and ibuprofen. Avoidance of these will help minimize bruising.

Difference Between Juvederm and Restylane

While these products share many similarities, your dermatologist may recommend one over the other solely for cosmetic purposes. Restylane promises “silkier, smoother, and natural-looking results.” Juvederm, specifically for lip fillers, has two purposes. Juvederm Ultra XC is meant to increase lip size. Juvederm Volbella focuses on reducing lines on the lips, while adding a small amount of volume. In addition, Juvederm lip results are instant, and Restylane is likely to show effects after a few days. Also, Juvederm results typically last longer than Restylane.
