Selecting the Best Moisturizer for Your Skin

Moisturizer should be used as part of your daily morning and nightly routine. There are a variety of benefits that can be appreciated immediately if you use the right kind of moisturizer for your skin type. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute can help you understand the type of skin you have and the right product to make it glow. Keep reading to learn what is best for your skin type.

Benefits of Moisturizers

After a long day in the sun or a long day spent inside with the air conditioning, your skin may tend to feel dry; as if it is lacking moisture. This is when moisturizers become a large part of our daily skin care routine. Moisturizers achieve exactly what its name says: moisture. When used properly, it helps the skin rejuvenate itself, rehydrates the skin, and stops it from drying out again.

Moisturizers also help slow the aging process. The earlier you begin a daily routine with your moisturizers the longer its effects will last. The result being younger-looking skin. Additionally, moisturizers are beneficial for those who have acne. Acne occurs when your pores are clogged. This is often caused by dry skin triggering a production of oil that causes clogged pores. By keeping your face hydrated with a moisturizer you can help prevent acne from forming since the skin won’t need to hang on to the excessive oils to keep it moisturized.

Not only will a moisturizer slow the aging process and prevent acne, it also provides protection from sunlight. The sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause significant damage to our skin. Using a moisturizer with SPF in addition to your typical SPF you put on now gives you double the protection. Still keep in mind when choosing a moisturizer with SPF, it should be based on your skin type.

Moisturizer and Different Skin Types

All skin types are different. Some people have dry skin, while others may have oily, combination, or sensitive skin. It is important to know your skin type so you get all the benefits out of your moisturizer.

For those with dry skin, you will want a moisturizer that contains Vitamin E, jojoba oil and/or natural oils. These ingredients help restore and hydrate the skin while revitalizing your complexion. It is important for those with oily skin to find a moisturizer that will not cause more oil production. Look for moisturizers with ingredients such as non-comedogenic, alcohol-free and oil-free. This allows the moisturizer to hydrate the skin while not feeling heavy or oily. Combination skin should use moisturizers that include one or more of the following: Vitamin A, C, D or E, aloe, oat flour and/or oil-free. These ingredients provide combination skin benefits of multiple moisturizers in one product. Lastly, if you have sensitive skin finding the right product is key to not irritating your skin further. Do not use products that contain acid, alcohol or fragrances as these are all common irritants. Instead, use products that contain ceramides, hyaluronic acid or aloe vera.
