Why Chemical Peels Are Safe and Recommended in the Winter

Once winter arrives, your skin can use a complete refresh. A chemical peel is a great treatment for revitalizing and rehydrating dry, winter skin. The dermatologists at Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute have the team and tools to give you the chemical peel treatment you are looking for. Learn more about how it works, its benefits, and why you need one this winter.

What to Know About Chemical Peels

What Is a Chemical Peel Facial Treatment?

The winter is the best time to have a chemical peel so it can work to treat any sun damage that occurred during the summer and it can treat the dry and dead skin that is occurring from the drop in temperature. A chemical peel is a safe, but intense facial that helps to remove surface layers of skin. It results in smoother and brighter skin and helps to treat:

  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Scarring
  • Acne
  • Age spots

There are three different options when it comes to chemical peels including light, medium and deep chemical peels. Consulting with a dermatologist will help you determine which one you will need based on the results you are looking to achieve.

Light Chemical Peels

Light chemical peels are best suited for those who have minor to mild skin impurities. During a light chemical peel, a chemical solution will be applied directly to the face for 15 minutes. After it exfoliates the skin, it is neutralized and washed off. Unlike other facial treatments, results are not immediate. They take up to two weeks to appear and your skin may be red until then. A light chemical peel is recommended to be performed every two weeks for up to four months for the best results.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium chemical peels are best for those with uneven skin tone, fine lines, and elasticity. Like a light chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied for 15 minutes, neutralized, and washed off. Since the solution is a bit stronger than the light chemical peel solution, you may experience a burning sensation. Again, results will not be immediate and may also take up to two weeks to see. While your skin is healing, you can expect redness and/or flaking of the skin.

Deep Chemical Peels

Not everyone’s skin can handle a deep chemical peel. Deep chemical peels help to improve wrinkles, skin discoloration and sun damage. Your skin is first treated with a superficial chemical peel followed by the deep chemical peel. Like the light and medium peels, the chemical solution is applied, neutralized then washed off. After treatment you will notice a lot of facial redness, crusting and possibly swelling for about two weeks until results appear. A deep chemical peels results will last for years.

Start your winter on a high note with a fresh face by getting a chemical peel. It can be done as a standalone treatment or added onto a facial, dermaplaning, or other facial treatment. If you are in Bloomington, Illinois or surrounding areas, complete this form and a dermatologist from Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Institute will be in touch.
